Turtles and Temples

Here's what we did for T...

Part of our week was all about turtles, so we did some turtle letter sorting and Arthur created his own little paper turtle sanctuary.

Turtle shell stamping was really fun! We used toothpicks to create designs in a bit of foam cut from a Styrofoam plate.

 We added some green paint...

 then started stamping!

Arthur added some turtle arms, legs, and tails to create a turtle family!

We made this guy from a paper bowl, some green paint, paper, glue and dried split peas to keep as a turtle pet.

The other focus this week was on teeth! We learned about our teeth, what makes up a tooth, and why it is important to take good care of them.

Arthur played a tooth cavity counting game by adding small black pompoms to the teeth to give them the right number of cavities!

This tooth got a nice makeover with some shiny white paint and a toothbrush!

This was our science experiment for the week. We started with three white hard boiled eggs (we talked about how the egg shell is kind of like the hard enamel that protects our teeth) and then soaked them overnight. The first egg sat in soda all night.

We put the second egg in red Kool-Aid.

The third egg got to soak in a vinegar bath.

Oh, we threw in another experiment to utilize our empty aluminum can from the soda.

This one was all about temperature. We added a little bit of water to the empty can and then heated it on the stove burner. Once the water inside was boiling I used a pair of tongs and moved it from the burner, flipped it upside down and set it into a bowl of cold water. This was the immediate result...

The experiment is called The Can Crusher!!

The next morning we checked on our eggs. The two that soaked in drinks came out looking a lot like the build up that gathers on our teeth if we don't brush them at the end of the day.

 YUK!

We added a little TLC and some toothpaste and brushed them white again!

The egg that soaked in vinegar was more like a tooth that was neglected for a long long time! The vinegar ate away the shell, so the next day we were left with a soft egg with no more enamel!

This was our food sorting activity. We had a happy tooth and a sad tooth and talked about what kind of foods make our teeth happy or sad.

All the sugary foods went to the sad tooth, with the fruits, veg, and dairy on the happy tooth!

To end our week we went on a Train ride down to Temple Square to celebrate the letter T!

We packed snacks and a picnic dinner to eat down town.

We had a wonderful time soaking up the spirit at the Temple and spending the day together as a family!!
