Spelunking and Exploring

A few weeks ago we got the chance to join with a group of homeschoolers from our area and take a trip to Creswell Caves in Nottinghamshire. The area around the caves was beautiful and really allowed you to glimpse into history.

There was a fun outdoor play area and visitors center.

Stella was technically too young to tour the caves, so she and I hung out while Chris and Arthur went into the first cave. The were able to view the oldest known example of cave art in England and hear more about how early man lived.

Hyenas were among the animals they have found bones from in these caves.

After we broke for lunch we headed back out with the group for another cave tour and this time they said it was alright for Stella to go through as well. Here she is- the poster child for spelunking safety in her cute helmet!

This was about as far in as we could be and still get good pictures, so we didn't get any of the inside of the caves. This was the second cave we toured and we got to handle some early human tools and artifacts that have been found in the area. The tour guide was really interesting and engaging and the whole experience was really fascinating! We have started studying history this year with Arthur and this trip went right along with learning about cave art and early man, so it was a perfect fit for us!
Arthur was really intrigued with the caves and it spurred a lot of interest and some extra library books about caves! We will definitely be making another 'spelunking' trip soon!

The Monday after our field trip was a bank holiday, so we drove out to these old Abbey ruins near leads. We took a picnic lunch and explored the ruins. It was a beautiful sunny day!

At least one person had to be silly in every picture just to ensure mommy's insanity!

Being funny together! I am so grateful for these two and the close bond they share. They are each others biggest fans and greatest supporters. They encourage each other and cheer for each other when they've done something new, and are quick to give a hug and a comforting word if something goes wrong. They treat each other kindly, and I know they will probably have rocky patches as most siblings do, but I love the foundation of respect and courtesy that they are building in their relationship. They are great examples to me of Christ like love!

The Abbey is really large and stunning, even though it is only half standing.

We loved our trips!
