School stuff and funny tidbits

We started Arthur's first grade work last week and we have loved it! New science curriculum, history, and classical literature units (starting with Treasure Island) have been a few his favorite things so far. I am really relieved to be moving on to first grade- we found kindergarten to be a bit tedious. Arthur has been a reluctant reader and finds handwriting challenging because he is left handed and frequently 'mirror writes' without realizing it (writing back to front like a mirror image of what it should be) which sometimes happens with left handed children. But until we could master the fundamentals of those things I didn't feel like he would be able to get as much out of the work I knew we wanted to be doing this year.
Like science!!
We made this rain gauge while studying precipitation and thanks to our wet English weather we get a new reading on it everyday.

I wanted to document our 'name' wall from last year in case I need to clear that space for something new this year. For each country we studied last year we found out what Arthur's name would look like written in the language of that country and put the really interesting ones up on the wall by our world map.

This weekend we watched General Conference with the kids and then had a Family Home Evening talking about our experiences hearing the talks. We asked the kids what talks they had enjoyed and Stella said, "I loved that one man." I asked her which man she meant and she said "The one that didn't have enough hair!"
Cute!
