This is the look that we usually get on our faces when someone tries to explain Guy Fawkes night to us. Let me put it in a nutshell for you: Guy Fawkes was part of a Catholic conspiracy group that planned to assassinate the Protestant King James I of England in 1605. The plot was discovered however and never went through. When the people found out that the king had been saved from death they celebrated by lighting bonfires. It became a national holiday and today includes fireworks and bonfires being lit around the 5th of November and stuffed effigies of Guy Fawkes being burned. So, basically- make a stuffed guy, burn him on a bonfire, and throw up a lot of fireworks and you've got yourself a Guy Fawkes night.
Now can you understand the look?
This was our first Guy Fawkes night in England and although Chris was traveling and didn't get to be there with us, we made it to the ward's bonfire celebration. One of the ward members owns a farm and hosts the celebration every year.
They had a pen of turkeys on the farm and Arthur loved watching them as long as he could find someone to lift him up so he could peer in.
Here's the bonfire, from a distance. Arthur wasn't sure about getting any closer to the fireworks, and I wasn't sure about trying to carry him across a muddy field to get a better look anyway.
The one shot that I got of the fireworks, pretty lame but at least I have proof of our presence there!
Happy Guy Fawkes night!

Perhaps this is why Halloween doesn't get much attention in England.... after burying bodys dressing up in develish costumes is just anti-climatic!
