Stick shift

The two things that I absolutely swore I would not do while we are living in England were 1. Pick up a British accent (we know some Americans turned British cockney- it doesn't sound pretty) and 2. Drive. Left hand roads plus stick shifts plus me is a recipe for disaster. In spite of this, my brother in law decided to take me out for a driving lesson a couple of weeks ago with Arthur in the back seat, but after a few turns around the neighborhood (and just as many restarts of the engine) we both decided I was better off sticking to my initial resolution. Then a few days ago, Chris took Arthur out to the car with him to grab something and Arthur latched right on to the steering wheel with one hand and the stick shift with the other and like a pro began 'driving'. He was shifting away, and I'm pretty sure that if he could have reached the clutch he would have been pedaling that as well. When I came out he gave me a big smile (without taking his hands off the wheel) as if to say, "See mom, its not so hard!".
